Purpose & Scientific Principle

The discovery of the nuclear structure of atoms means that atomic physics and nuclear physics are about to appear, and it is also the prelude to the birth of modern structural chemistry. The exhibition sets up an enlarged atomic model and three groups of small models to demonstrate human understanding and discovery process of atomic structure. Through interaction, we can understand the basic composition and characteristics of atoms, and at the same time realize the significance of the discovery of atomic structure to physics and materials science.

How to Operate

Atom refers to the basic particle that cannot be further divided in chemical reactions. Atoms are indivisible in chemical reactions but can be divided in physical states. Atoms are composed of a nucleus and electrons orbiting the nucleus. In 1897, British physicist Joseph John Thomson discovered electrons and determined their charge-to-mass ratio while studying cathode rays. In 1918, Rutherford conducted an experiment of bombarding nitrogen nuclei with alpha particles and discovered particles with stronger penetrating power than alpha. He introduced this particle into the electric and magnetic fields, and based on its deflection in the electric and magnetic fields, measured its mass and electric charge, and determined that it was the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, also called a proton. In 1932, Chadwick's experiment of bombarding beryllium with alpha particles confirmed the existence of neutrons in the nucleus.

Humanity has experienced many twists and turns in the process of establishing and completing the atomic model. The atomic model was first proposed by the British scientist Dalton in 1803. After improvements and improvements by Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr and others, the modern atomic model was formed. Today, the generally accepted atomic model is composed of an atomic nucleus (protons and neutrons) and electrons. The electrons move irregularly around the nucleus to form an electron cloud model.
