Purpose & Scientific Principle

In line with the development context of the Western Industrial Revolution, China's modern industry, although backward, has slowly stepped onto the stage of history.

Through the display, the audience can fully understand the practical application of steam engines and realize that China was also affected by the Industrial Revolution and began to change its production and lifestyle, and the steam engine appeared. At the same time, combined with the background of the times, the audience can understand the outstanding contribution and great historical significance of Anqing Ordnance Institute.

How to Operate

After the invention of the steam engine, it began to be used in many different fields. Steam locomotives and steamships appeared one after another, changing human transportation methods. This same change also came from the West to the East and had an impact on China.

1. Anqing Ordnance Institute: In 1861, Zeng Guofan decided to "learn from the barbarians and gain skills to control the barbarians" and manufacture Western-style weapons and ships. The completion of the Anqing Ordnance Institute was the earliest new government-run arsenal of the Westernization Movement in the late Qing Dynasty, the earliest modern weapons military workshop established by the Qing government, and the beginning of China's modern machinery industry. Anqing Ordnance Institute was the first modern military industrial enterprise established by China relying on its own strength. It was the first government-run military enterprise in modern China, marking the beginning of modern industry.

2. In August 1862, China’s first practical steam engine was built.

3. The Huanghu steamship is the first steam engine paddle steamer designed and built by China: it was designed and built by Xu Shou and Hua Hengfang at the Ordnance Institute in Anqing. It was built in 1865 (the fourth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty). Zeng Guofan named it "Huanghu". It is 17 meters long, has a speed of 6 knots and a dead weight of 25 tons. Since then, China's modern shipbuilding industry has begun to develop. Although the development speed is relatively slow, the contribution of the shipbuilding industry to China's modernization cannot be ignored.

4. In 1881, China built the Tangxu Railway using the "China Rocket" steam locomotive (namely "Rocket"), which reached a speed of 32 kilometers per hour.

5. Feng Ru No. 1: It first flew into space on July 3, 1954. It was the first aircraft designed, developed and produced by the Chinese.

6. China’s first telephone.

Fully understand the practical application of steam engines and realize that China was also affected by the Industrial Revolution and began to change its production and lifestyle, and the steam engine appeared.
