Purpose & Scientific Principle

In order to adapt to and transform nature, ancient ancestors created a variety of tools and technologies, and continued to develop themselves in production practice. The exhibition items select scenes of ancient people's life, hunting, and planting, and display the main tools and technologies used by ancient ancestors in the Neolithic Age in different scenes. The purpose is to allow the audience to have a general understanding of the living environment of ancient ancestors, and to understand the historical background conditions for the emergence of tools and technologies in ancient times and their important impact on human evolution and development.

How to Operate

In the dawn of mankind, ancient ancestors continued to create various tools and technologies in order to adapt to and transform nature, laying a solid foundation for human civilization. The use of tools marks the beginning of human creation itself and is also the germination of primitive technology.

1. Stone tool making

On the eve of human civilization, the most important scientific and technological progress was the production of stone tools. The emergence of stone tools meant that humans began an evolutionary process that was different from other species.

About 2.5 million years ago, the earliest Oldowan tools appeared, which were the earliest stone tools and were suitable for cutting animal hides. About 1.76 million years ago, more advanced stone tools began to appear, and the earliest Acheulean hand axes appeared. These were the majority of hand axes that were deliberately polished. By 125,000 BC, Moster's flake tools, made with Levallois technology, became dominant in Europe.

An identifying feature of Neolithic technology is the use of polished or ground stone tools, and fine stone arrowheads are also a specialty of the Neolithic.

2. The use of fire

Once humans mastered fire, they gained the power to transform the world and thereby create themselves. The earliest evidence of the use of fire was found at the Yacob site of Gesherbenot in Israel about 700,000 years ago.

Early hominids learned about the power of fire by observing wildfires caused by lightning strikes. They used fire to ignite branches as weapons to ward off predators or to provide light and heat. From using fire to inventing artificial fire, this is a big step forward. Humans may have made fire using a fire plow or fire drill that generated heat through two planks of wood. Frictional heat causes the wood chips to ignite, allowing it to be used to light a larger fire.

3. The invention of the bow and arrow

In the late Paleolithic Age, late Homo sapiens invented bows and arrows and learned to hunt in an organized manner. The bow was first used around 64,000 BC.

Bows and arrows marked the first time that humans transformed simple tools into composite tools and took advantage of the tension of elastic materials. Engels said: "The bow and arrow are as decisive a weapon to the barbaric age as the iron sword is to the barbaric age and firearms are to the civilized age."

At the dawn of mankind, ancient ancestors continued to create various tools and technologies in order to adapt to and transform nature, laying a solid foundation for human civilization. The use of tools marks the beginning of human creation itself and is also the germination of primitive technology.
