Purpose & Scientific Principle

The exhibits use knobs to adjust the values of dark matter and dark energy in the universe, and watch the three future directions of the universe outlined by modern science: the big tear, the big collapse and the big freeze.

How to Operate

The current basic theory of the universe believes that the role of dark energy is to promote the accelerated expansion of the universe; dark matter is a fundamental thing in the formation of structural galaxies. The subtle relationship between the three parameters determines the future evolution of the entire universe. For example, due to gravitational attraction, the average density of the universe, the omega value, acts as a brake to slow down the accelerated expansion of the universe after the big bang. The greater the density of matter in the universe, that is, the omega value, the more obvious the brake effect is, and it can even reverse the expansion of the universe.

Three parameters:

The Hubble constant (referred to as H) is the rate of expansion of the universe.

Omega value (Ω for short) refers to the value of the average density of matter in the universe.

Lambda value (abbreviated as ∧) refers to the value of energy or dark energy related to vacuum space.

Where will the fate of the universe go? How will the universe end? According to existing scientific theories, modern science has outlined three endings of the universe: the Big Rip, the Big Crunch, and the Big Freeze.

(1) Big Rip: Dark energy produces repulsive force. This fate believes that under the influence of dark energy, the universe will not stop expanding, but will accelerate the expansion and continue. The accelerating expansion of the universe will cause the disintegration of galaxies, the solar system, the Milky Way, etc. Finally, the atoms that make up all matter will be torn apart. Eventually, the entire universe will be torn apart by dark energy, and everything will be destroyed.

(2) Big Crunch: Dark matter is related to the attraction in the universe. This fate believes that the expansion of the universe will not continue forever. As time goes by, when the expansion of the universe reaches the limit, the universe will begin to reverse contraction. Groups of galaxies will gradually approach each other and eventually merge, while stars, planets and other celestial bodies will also collide and merge with each other. Eventually, the entire universe will be compressed and returned to a singularity with infinitely small volume and infinite density.

(3) The Big Freeze: Dark matter and dark energy remain in balance, and the fate of the universe is "heat death." This conjecture holds that all stars in the universe will eventually exhaust their last energy and die one after another, and the universe will fall into darkness and cold, without light and warmth. When extremely massive stars die, they evolve into black holes. Devouring everything in the universe, the universe will become nothing.

Does the universe have a lifespan? What would happen if the life of the universe came to an end? The exhibits mainly display the fate of the universe speculated by scientists, as well as the impact of the values of dark matter and dark energy on the fate of the universe.
