Purpose & Scientific Principle
Through models and touch screen operations, the exhibits allow the audience to understand the structural model, working principle, and detection results of the "China Sky Eye" (FAST), as well as the scientific goals and important role of building the Sky Eye, as well as the great scientist spirit of Nan Rendong, the father of the Sky Eye.
How to Operate
500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope: Located in Guizhou Province, China, it is a major scientific and technological infrastructure construction project of China’s National “11th Five-Year Plan”. The reflecting surface of a radio telescope is equivalent to 30 football fields. The sensitivity is more than 2.5 times that of the world's second largest telescope, greatly expanding human vision. It is the world's largest single-aperture and most sensitive radio telescope.
Scientific goals: patrol the neutral hydrogen in the universe and study large-scale physics of the universe to explore the origin and evolution of the universe; observe pulsars to study the material structure and physical laws in extreme states; lead the international low-frequency very long baseline interferometry network to obtain the ultra-fine structure of celestial bodies; detect interstellar molecules, study star formation and evolution, black holes in the core of galaxies, and explore the origin of life in space; search for possible interstellar communication signals and search for extraterrestrial civilizations.
The FAST system consists of: telescope master control system, feed support overall control system, and active reflector control system. a Telescope master control system: used to coordinate and control each subsystem, monitor the operating status of each component, troubleshoot, collect and record operating data, and provide a unified time standard so that the telescope can conduct astronomical observations as planned. b Feed support overall control system: As the center of the radio telescope, its main functions are feed support measurement data processing, astronomical trajectory planning, feed support overall control and system timing. c Active reflective surface control system: Based on astronomical trajectory planning and measurement data, the node position of the reflective surface is controlled by adjusting the extension of the actuator to form a paraboloid with accurate position and surface shape.
Nan Rendong: Chief scientist and chief engineer of FAST. Faced with the huge engineering difficulties of the project, he saved the day from danger time and time again, and finally FAST was successfully constructed. On September 15, 2017, Nan Rendong closed his eyes forever. Seventy-two years of life, it seems that I came here just for FAST. I worked hard and risked my life to achieve a masterpiece in the academic world.
Data results: So far, the "China Sky Eye" has discovered more than 740 new pulsars.
The exhibits mainly display the appearance, functional structure, exploration target, detection process, detection results, etc. of the "Chinese Sky Eye", and introduce the story of Nan Rendong, the father of the Sky Eye.
