Purpose & Scientific Principle

The moment of inertia is a measure of the inertia of a rigid body when it rotates around an axis (the characteristic that a rotating object maintains its uniform circular motion or is stationary). The moment of inertia is only determined by the shape, mass distribution and position of the axis of rotation, and has nothing to do with the rotational state of the rigid body around the axis (such as the magnitude of the angular velocity). When two wheels have the same mass, the one with a farther mass distribution from the center of the wheel axle has a larger moment of inertia. Under the same torque, the one with a larger moment of inertia will have a smaller angular acceleration. This exhibition introduces the influence of mass distribution on the magnitude of rotational inertia through two sets of interactive mechanisms.

How to Operate

This exhibition is mainly composed of wheels, baffles, tracks, booths, etc., and has two sets of interactive mechanisms. There are two wheels on the booth track. Each set of wheels has the same diameter and equal mass. However, due to their different mass distribution, the moment of inertia will be different. If the audience fixes the two wheels on the top of the two tracks and removes the baffles at the same height at the same time, they will find that the wheel with the metal blocks concentrated in the middle reaches the end first and arrives first.

1. Fix the two wheels on the top of the two tracks;

2. Remove the baffle and see which wheel reaches the bottom the fastest.
