Purpose & Scientific Principle
Demonstrates the fountain invented by Hero during the ancient Roman period and its working process through experimental devices.
How to Operate
Hero Fountain: Hero Fountain uses the water level difference between different containers to generate potential energy and drive water to spray under a certain pressure. The device mainly consists of three containers, the upper one is a dish without a lid (a), and the lower two are sealed balls (b\c). These three containers are connected by three pipes. The connection method is shown in the picture: there is some water in dish a; ball b is filled with water; when ball c is filled with air, the fountain starts to work. Water flows from a to c along the tube, and the air in c is discharged into ball b; the water in ball b is pressured by the incoming air, and rises up along the tube, forming a fountain on container a. When the water in ball b runs out, that is to say, when all the water in ball b flows into ball C, the fountain will stop spraying water.
Outstanding inventor - Hero: In addition to fountains, Hero used his own whimsical ideas to create many interesting inventions that broke through that era. Although most of these inventions were not used for scientific research, they inspired later generations of scientists to invent scientific experimental instruments. The devices he invented include: the earliest steam engine - the steam ball (although others have proposed the theory of the steam ball before, Hero was the first to elaborate on the details of its production); dramatic performance devices; vending machines two thousand years ago - holy water dispensing devices; wind-driven steam organs; syringes; automatic doors of temples, etc.
