Purpose & Scientific Principle

The exhibition displays the principles and applications of Archimedes' screw lifting mechanism, explaining the inventions and ingenuity of this great scientific master in the Hellenistic period in the field of technical engineering, and the important role these inventions and ingenuity still play in modern society.

How to Operate

Engineering application and principles of Archimedes screw: (1) Principle of screw conveyor: When the screw shaft rotates, due to the gravity of the material and the friction generated with the trough wall, the material can only move forward along the bottom of the trough of the conveyor under the push of the blades. The situation is like a non-rotatable nut making translational motion along the rotating screw. The main driving force of the material is the force that pushes the material upward and forward along the tangential direction of the blade when the spiral blade rotates axially. (2) Archimedean screw pump principle: When the motor drives the pump shaft to rotate, the screw rotates around its own axis on the one hand, and rolls along the inner surface of the bushing on the other hand, thus forming a sealed chamber of the pump. Each time the screw rotates once, the liquid in the seal cavity pushes one screw forward. With the continuous rotation of the screw, the liquid is pressed from one seal cavity to the other in a spiral manner, and finally squeezes out of the pump body. The screw pump is a new type of liquid conveying machine. It has the advantages of simple structure, safe and reliable operation, convenient use and maintenance, continuous and uniform liquid discharge, and stable pressure.

Principle of the Archimedes Spiral Water Lifter: The Archimedes Spiral is a huge spiral in a wooden cylinder (a hollow tube spirally wound around a cylinder). It is placed at an angle and the lower end is immersed in the water. As the cylinder rotates, the water is lifted up along the spiral tube and flows out from the upper end. In this way, water can be raised from one level to another to irrigate the fields.
