Purpose & Scientific Principle
The exhibits simulate observation and exploration through AR interaction and graphic display to deepen the public's understanding of the principles of carbon storage and sequestration in grasslands.
How to Operate
The world's total grassland area is about 5.25 billion hectares, accounting for 40.5% of the earth's total land area, and stores 34% of the total carbon in terrestrial ecosystems. Grassland carbon sink refers to the grassland ecosystem absorbing carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and converting it into organic matter, thereby achieving the effect of mitigating greenhouse gases. Grassland ecosystems occupy an important position in the global carbon sink.
The above-ground vegetation layer, underground root layer and soil layer of grasslands are the three most important carbon pools in grasslands. The grassland ecosystem absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and fixes the carbon in the grassland plants and grassland soil in the form of organic carbon, thus forming a "carbon container" for the grassland ecosystem. Compared with tall forest trees, the rich vegetation types and large and complex underground root systems of grasslands are important weapons for achieving carbon sequestration. Herbaceous plants are generally closer to the ground, with less shading between plants. The plants receive a larger area of light, and the proportion of green parts in the plants is higher. This makes the photosynthesis efficiency and growth rate of grassland plants higher than that of forest trees. In addition, the large and complex underground root system is an important part of grassland plants, and its biomass is often greater than aboveground biomass. They are mainly composed of organic matter formed by photosynthesis and are the most stable carbon pool in plants. Grassland plants absorb CO2 from the air, fix it in the soil and vegetation, and create and accumulate organic matter needed for growth. After grassland plants die, part of the litter undergoes humification to form soil organic carbon and is fixed in the soil. Part of the organic carbon is reused by plants after mineralization by soil animals and soil microorganisms, thus forming a biological cycle of carbon within the ecosystem. According to relevant research, the carbon storage capacity of grassland soil layers is generally 15-20 times that of vegetation layers. The total carbon sequestration capacity of China's grassland plant layers and soil layers should reach nearly 2 billion tons, which is approximately equivalent to the annual exhalation of 17.8 billion people and the annual carbon dioxide emissions of 3.3 billion cars.
In order to make the exhibits more interesting and interactive, the exhibits will use AR technology to present a realistic and immersive experience to the audience. Audiences can immerse themselves in the grassland ecosystem through AR equipment and understand the concept and role of grassland carbon sinks. At the same time, you can also experience the diversity and beautiful landscape of the grassland ecosystem, enhancing the audience's environmental awareness and participation.
