Purpose & Scientific Principle

The exhibits allow the audience to understand the working principle of flywheel energy storage through model interaction and graphic and lighting demonstrations, and at the same time guide the audience to pay attention to the application of flywheel energy storage technology in various fields.

How to Operate

Flywheel energy storage is a physical energy storage technology originating from the aerospace field. It refers to an energy storage method that uses electrical energy to drive a flywheel to rotate at high speed, convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, and drive the motor to generate electricity through the inertia of the flywheel when needed, converting the stored mechanical energy into electrical energy output. The acceleration and deceleration are realized by motor drive.

Flywheel energy storage has the following advantages: good power characteristics, fast response speed, millisecond-level high-power charge and discharge, and high reliability; high efficiency, maintenance-free, no friction loss of magnetic levitation support, long system maintenance cycle; not affected by repeated deep discharge times, service life is generally more than 20 years; wide applicable temperature, capacity characteristics are not affected by high and low temperatures, the operating temperature is generally -10 to +40°C; no chemical substances, green and pollution-free.

Flywheel energy storage technology was initially used in UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for special occasions, and later moved to braking energy recovery in rail transit. At present, the main application markets of flywheel energy storage equipment include rail transit power recovery and power grid frequency regulation, of which the proportion of installed power grid frequency regulation exceeds 80%.

The advantages of flywheel energy storage technology are fast charging and discharging, continuous charging and discharging, and deep charging and discharging. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) cannot take advantage of flywheel energy storage. The braking energy recovery of rail transit cannot be fully utilized. The biggest demand in the entire scenario is the frequency regulation of the power grid, that is, responding to the charging and discharging instructions of the dispatch center and smoothing the active power fluctuations of the power grid.

In the traditional power system, the frequency fluctuation of the power grid only comes from the unplanned power consumption behavior of power users. The stability of the power grid can be ensured by relying on the regulation of hydropower units and thermal power units. And most of the increase in power load relies on the addition of more thermal power units and hydropower units, and the rapid adjustment capability of the power grid can be increased simultaneously.

Not only is it difficult for new energy power generation to have the same regulatory capabilities as hydropower units and thermal power units, but the natural fluctuations in new energy power generation also add new volatility to the power grid. Traditional generating units cannot withstand such fluctuations, which requires energy storage equipment to assist traditional generating units and share the responsibility of stabilizing the power grid.

At present, the main application markets of flywheel energy storage equipment include rail transit power recovery and power grid frequency regulation, of which the proportion of installed power grid frequency regulation exceeds 80%. The most suitable scenario for flywheel energy storage in the power system is primary frequency regulation, and the demand explosion in this field began last year. With the integration of large-scale new energy into the grid, the frequency of the entire power grid fluctuates more and more, and there is an urgent need for short-term and high-frequency energy storage technology support such as flywheel energy storage.

In addition to its application in power systems, flywheel energy storage also has many other application fields, such as uninterruptible power supply guarantee, power quality management, national defense, energy recovery and many other fields.

The exhibit is designed to demonstrate how flywheel energy storage works. Set up a flywheel energy storage model, and the audience can directly observe its internal structure through the transparent shield, guiding the audience to think about the role of each part. The flywheel device is started through the interaction of the handle. When storing energy, the electric energy is converted by the power converter and drives the motor to run. The motor drives the flywheel to accelerate and rotate. The flywheel stores the energy in the form of kinetic energy, completing the energy storage process of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. The energy is stored at high After that, the motor maintains a constant speed until it receives a control signal for energy release; when the energy is released, the high-speed rotating flywheel drives the motor to generate electricity, and the power converter outputs current and voltage, completing the energy release process of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.
