Purpose & Scientific Principle
The exhibits demonstrate the operation process of Tokamak through a model as a whole, and use interactive devices combined with multimedia to analyze relevant principles step by step, allowing the audience to understand the structure and principles of Tokamak, a nuclear energy application device. Allow participants to gain an in-depth understanding of the national scientific facility and the significance of nuclear fusion to the future development of human society.
How to Operate
Energy is closely related to human survival. It is the material basis for improving people's living standards, developing world civilization and conquering nature. With the rapid growth of global energy consumption, energy security issues and energy environment issues have increasingly become issues of great concern to all walks of life domestically and to the international community. We are facing an unprecedented energy crisis. Scientists from all over the world are working hard to research, develop and utilize new energy sources. Regarding the development of new energy sources, apart from solar energy, the most promising one is nuclear energy.
Nuclear energy includes two main forms: fission energy and fusion energy. Fission energy is the huge energy released by the fission of the nuclei of heavy metal elements. Heavy metal elements such as uranium required for fission are scarce on the earth, and conventional fission reactors produce highly radioactive nuclear waste. These factors limit the development of fission energy. Fusion energy is the energy released by the fusion of two lighter nuclei into one heavier nucleus. The fuel that maintains fusion is the hydrogen isotope deuterium and tritium. Deuterium is extremely abundant in the earth's seawater. It has been calculated that the fusion energy produced by the deuterium contained in one liter of seawater is equivalent to the energy released by 300 liters of gasoline. The reserves of deuterium in seawater can last billions of years of human use. In particular, the waste produced by fusion is helium, which is clean and safe. Therefore, fusion energy is an unlimited, clean, and safe new energy source. The current controlled nuclear fusion research is dedicated to realizing the peaceful use of fusion energy. In fact, mankind has achieved deuterium and tritium nuclear fusion - hydrogen bomb explosion, but that is an uncontrollable instantaneous release of energy, and mankind needs controlled nuclear fusion.
Tokamak is a ring-shaped vessel that uses magnetic confinement to achieve controlled nuclear fusion. Its name Tokamak comes from toroid, vacuum chamber, magnet, coil. It was originally invented in the 1950s by Azimovich and others at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, Soviet Union. At the center of the tokamak is a ring-shaped vacuum chamber with coils wrapped around the outside. When electricity is energized, a huge spiral magnetic field is generated inside the tokamak, which heats the plasma in it to a very high temperature to achieve nuclear fusion. On January 20, 2025, the All-Superconducting Tokamak Nuclear Fusion Experimental Facility (EAST) set a new world record in Hefei, Anhui Province, completing "high-quality combustion" for 1,000 seconds at 100 million degrees Celsius for the first time.
The new record further proves the feasibility of nuclear fusion energy and marks that China is at the forefront of international research in the field of steady-state magnetic confinement.
The exhibits extracted the basic structural shape of the tokamak device, evolved it into a sci-fi and artistic shape, and raised the three-dimensional vertical structure. It used light strip demonstration combined with media interaction to create an interactive exhibition item with visual impact and high participation. The central axis layout is adopted to raise the visual center of gravity of the exhibition items to the upper structure of the exhibition items, and the longitudinal visual perception of the exhibition items is enhanced through the echoes of demonstration devices and interactive devices.
