Purpose & Scientific Principle

This exhibit allows the audience to understand the various surface forms through holographic interaction, and learn that the surface form is the comprehensive result of internal and external geological forces on the earth's crust, while further understanding the mutual transformation of the three major types of rocks in the lithosphere.

How to Operate

Rocks can be divided into three categories: igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks according to their origin. These three types of rocks transform into each other under the influence of internal and external forces, so that the materials in the lithosphere are in constant cyclic motion.

(1) Magmatic rock: Magmatic rock is the product of magmatic activity. Under the action of huge pressure, underground magma invades the upper part of the earth's crust or erupts from the surface along the weak zone of the earth's crust, that is, a volcanic eruption. With changes in temperature and pressure, the rock formed by cooling and solidification is called magmatic rock; among them, rocks formed by volcanic eruptions are also called volcanic rocks. Common magmatic rocks include granite, basalt, etc.

(2) Sedimentary rocks: The rocks exposed on the surface are weathered and eroded, and gradually turn into gravel, sand and soil. They are deposited by the transport of wind and flowing water, and the rocks formed after compaction and consolidation are called sedimentary rocks. It can be divided into conglomerate, sandstone and shale according to particle size; it is formed by the accumulation of chemical sediments and biological remains, called limestone. Sedimentary rocks are built up in layers over time, and the different rock layers often record the Earth's history.

(3) Metamorphic rocks: The rocks that have been formed in the earth's crust, under the high temperature and high pressure conditions generated by magma activity, change the composition and properties of the original rocks. The resulting rocks are called metamorphic rocks. For example: limestone becomes marble when heated; shale metamorphoses into hard slate when extruded, etc.

The exhibit "Formation and Types of Rocks" focuses on displaying the shapes and structures of different types of rocks. It uses 360-degree holographic imaging technology to display it more intuitively, allowing the audience to understand the formation and mutual transformation process of the three major rocks through vivid pictures during the interactive process.
