Purpose & Scientific Principle

This exhibit uses a wall splicing screen combined with an interactive operation platform to draw and display colorful ocean pictures. Through an artistic experience, the audience can learn the causes of the ocean, understand the multiple variable factors that cause the ocean to show different colors, and create their favorite colorful ocean through the operation buttons.

How to Operate

(1) Causes of the formation of the ocean:

The ocean is the general name for the most extensive body of water on Earth, with a total area of approximately 360 million square kilometers, accounting for approximately 71% of the Earth's surface area.

When the Earth was first formed, there was no atmosphere, no oceans, and no life. In the first few hundred million years after the formation of the Earth, due to the thin crust and the constant bombardment of small celestial bodies on the Earth's surface, magma in the mantle continued to erupt. Along with the magma, there was a large amount of water vapor and carbon dioxide. These gases rose into the air and gradually formed clouds. Later, the small water droplets in the clouds turned into rain.

After a long period of rainfall, a large amount of rainwater gradually accumulated in the low-lying areas of the original crust, forming the most primitive ocean.

(2) Causes of different colors of oceans:

Factors that affect the color of the ocean include: seawater depth, suspended particles in seawater, and marine life. As the sun sometimes disappears in the clouds and sometimes shines through the clouds, the color of the ocean changes accordingly. The color of the ocean also depends on how high the sun is above the horizon.

Blue Ocean: The sun's rays are white light visible to the naked eye; but it is composed of seven kinds of visible light: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, indigo, and violet. These seven types of light have different wavelengths, and seawater at different depths will absorb light beams of different wavelengths. After the red, orange, yellow and other light beams with longer wavelengths are irradiated into the seawater, they are gradually absorbed; while the blue and cyan light beams with shorter wavelengths are irradiated into the seawater and encounter seawater molecules or other tiny floating bodies suspended in the ocean, and are reflected and scattered in all directions. In particular, seawater absorbs less blue light and reflects more. The deeper you go, the more blue light is refracted back to the surface of the water. Therefore, the seawater in the ocean we see is blue.

Yellow Sea: The Yellow Sea of China is located between the Bohai Sea and the East China Sea in China. The Yellow River flowing through the Loess Plateau carries a large amount of sediment into the sea. At the same time, the Huaihe River, Biliu River, Yalu River, and the Han River, Datong River, and Qingchuan River in the Korean Peninsula all flow into the Yellow Sea, making the sea water yellow; especially in offshore areas, the sea water is mostly khaki and turbid. Hence the name Yellow Sea.

Red Sea: The Red Sea between Asia and Africa has the Arabian Desert on one side and the dry wind blowing from the Sahara Desert on the other. The water temperature and salt content in the sea water are relatively high, so red-brown algae multiply in large numbers. The patches of coral and the small red seaweed in the bay are coated with a layer of red color, so the Red Sea is light red when seen, hence the name Red Sea.

Black Sea: The surface of the Black Sea is filled with fresh water such as the Don River, the Dnieper River, and the Dogo River, which are less dense; the deep layers of the Black Sea are filled with high-density salt water from the Mediterranean Sea. A density leap layer is formed between the upper and lower seawater, which seriously hinders the water exchange between the upper and lower water layers. Due to the lack of oxygen in the deep layers of the Black Sea, the filth secreted by organisms and dead bodies in the upper seawater sink to the depths to rot and smell, and a large amount of sludge and turbid water make the ocean black.

White Sea: The White Sea is the marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, deep into the inland of northwest Russia. The weather is extremely cold, and the freezing period lasts for six months. The White Sea gets its name because the white snow covering the coast does not melt. The thick ice freezes its harbor and the sea is covered with snow. Due to the strong reflection on the white surface, the sea water we see is white.

The exhibit "Colorful Ocean" focuses on showing the causes that affect the differences in ocean colors, and popularizes relevant ocean knowledge about the causes of ocean colors through interactive game experiences.
